Is hiring a GEO agency worth it in 2026? An honest answer

Recently I read this in a discussion about hiring a GEO agency: “If your business isn’t the first name an AI spits out, you don’t exist to a huge chunk of buyers.” It is a dramatic way to put it, and like most dramatic sentences about marketing, it is part truth and part fear.

My short answer: for many small businesses, GEO on its own is rarely the best investment. GEO combined with clear content and a clear website often is.

I have worked in SEO and online marketing since 2009. Here is my honest answer to the question, without the panic.

What has really changed

More people now ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google’s AI Overviews when they need a recommendation. Instead of a list of links they often get one answer, sometimes with a few names in it. If you are one of those names, that is valuable. If you are not, you are simply not part of that conversation.

At the same time, classic search has not disappeared. Many people still search on Google, scroll Instagram, ask friends and read reviews. AI search is a new channel that is growing, not a switch that turned everything else off overnight.

What can a GEO agency do for my business?

Good GEO work makes your business easy to understand, verify and quote. In practice that means:

  • Your website states clearly who you are, what you offer and for whom
  • Structured data helps machines read your services, prices, places and people correctly
  • Your content answers the real questions your clients ask, so AI tools have something worth quoting
  • Your information is consistent across your website, profiles and directories
  • Other trusted sites mention you, which helps with people and, as far as anyone can tell, with AI tools too

What can GEO not do?

No agency can guarantee that an AI tool will recommend you. The answers vary by person, by wording and by model version. You also cannot “buy” a place inside a language model. Waiting is not a disaster either: the foundations that help with AI search are the same ones that help with Google, so nothing you do there is wasted.

GEO is also not a replacement for a clear offer and good work. In my experience, AI tools tend to mention businesses that are already described well and talked about positively. GEO makes that visible. It cannot invent it.

When an agency is worth it

In my experience, outside help pays off when one or more of these is true:

  • People in your field already ask AI tools for recommendations, and you can check that by asking a few typical questions yourself
  • Your website is out of date, unclear or hard for search engines to read
  • You know content matters, but you don’t have the time to create it regularly
  • You want SEO and GEO handled together instead of paying two different providers

When you can start on your own

If your budget is tight, you can do a lot yourself before hiring anyone. A simple start:

  1. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google five questions your ideal clients would ask. Note who gets named and why.
  2. Check your homepage: does it say in the first lines what you do, for whom and where?
  3. Write one honest FAQ page with the questions you hear most often, answered in your own words.
  4. Make sure your name, address, offer and contact details are the same everywhere online.
  5. Ask happy clients for a review on a platform that matters in your field.

What I would look for in an agency

If you do decide to get help, look for clarity over buzzwords. A good partner explains the process in plain language, is honest about what nobody can control, works on your content and website rather than only on dashboards, and fits the size of your business. I wrote more about this in How to choose a GEO agency that actually understands AI search.

So, is it worth it?

For many small, personal businesses the honest answer is: GEO on its own is rarely the best investment. GEO combined with good content and a clear website often is. Visibility in AI search grows from the same things that make you visible everywhere else: knowing what you stand for, saying it clearly and showing up consistently.

That is exactly the combination I offer for spiritual and sustainable brands with Visible, Without the Noise: content in your voice, checked by me, and a website that AI search tools can read and understand. If you are unsure whether it makes sense for you, ask me in a free call. If it does not, I will say so.
